This field is alpha-numeric and based on the SignGridfeature class found on SDE (PW_Signs dataset). The SignGrid digits are represented by the first two letters of the ASSET_ID (ex: "AA") and are an exact match to the GRIDID field in that feature class. The streetlights are number sequentially as they are surveyed (or new ones added) and that number is reflected in the final digits of the ASSET_ID (ex: "BG296"). Important: Any streetlight with a JURISDICTION of "CALTRANS" should NOT receive an actual ASSET_ID.

In 2017, Olivia created a script that will auto-generate the ASSET IDs; however some work needed to be done in order to keep the CALTRANS fields from populating.

Other information: The dataset contains other fields that, in the past, have represented the streetlight ID. Those fields are "LIGHT_ID" and "OLD_ASSET_ID". Both fields are populated only by Public Works staff. The LIGHT_ID field will no longer have data added to it by any office, however the Public Works staff who are surveying the street lights will add data to the OLD_ASSET_ID field as needed. This information is to be kept per Public Works.
